Why learning Canadian French?

If you want to make your understanding easier in Canada and especially in Quebec region, you might want to study with a Canadian Tutor. Because Quebec French (aka 'Le Quebecois') has particularities. We have compiled some of the major differences between Quebec French and Parisian French.

Canadian French Pronunciation

There are several oral differences. The accent is rather strong / pronounced; It is the French accent as it was spoken by the French of France ... at the time of King Louis XIV:
  • Canadian use much more often the "tu" (thou) instead of the "vous" (you)
  • There are very often oaths about the Catholic Church ("Tabarnak's Cave")
  • There are turns of phrases you can only find in Québécois French (« J’ai-tu l’air fatigué ? »)

Vocabulary

Some words have another signification, for example:
  • The "linen" is a cloth
  • The liquor "refers to a soft drink and does not contain alcohol

Anglicisms

Since Quebec is a province surrounded by Anglophone provinces (they have 4 centuries of cohabitation), there are many anglicisms in Quebecois, and they are almost always used (a "dresser" is a tire). Yet, despite the frequent use of Anglicisms, Quebec strongly defends the French language, and French is the official language of Quebec. L'Office Québécois de la Langue Française ensures that all anglicisms are translated (i.e a "courriel" is the French word for an email, "le magasinage means "shopping"...). Therefore, always make sure to use the French word in all your correspondence with organizations or Quebec companies !
