Romantic French Phrases for Flirting

Before you can get to the romance part, you need to do a little flirting! The subtle art of flirting in France is actually very common and is a trademark of daily conversation. Some have described it as an obligation to appreciate all things in life that are pleasing. If you visit, you should expect to hone your flirting skills, but you can’t be too obvious if you want to fit in with the French. In most cases, casual flirting leads nowhere. Pronounced: kess kuh zhuh fur ay sohn twah?
Translated: What would I do without you? The subtlety is there and if your friend is interested, he/she will get the message loud and clear!

• Est-ce que tu es aussi doux que tes yeux?

Pronounced: ess kuh too ay see doo ku tayz yuh?
Translated: Are you as sweet as your eyes are? Perhaps this is the right phrase just before a kiss?

• Tu as de très beaux yeux.

Pronounced: too ah duh tray bo zyeh
Translated: You have beautiful eyes. Not so subtle flirting or a genuine compliment–it’s all in how you say it.

While subtle flirting is common place in France, getting to the next step is not. In fact, you will find that French men who are happily married engage in flirtatious banter from time to time. Flirting in France requires quick wit and while you won’t find that there is any one line that’s used all the time, use any of these and you may just sweep her (or him) off of their feet.

Pronounced: zhuh puh pah veevr sahn twah.
Translated: I can’t live without you. A great way to lead up to a proposal for marriage. . .or just express your undying love!

• Tu es la femme de mes rêves!

Pronounced: too ay lah femm duh mey rhev
Translated: You are the woman of my dreams. (Note: substitute ‘l’homme‘ for ‘la femme‘ if you’re speaking to a man.)

• Tu me rends fou.

Pronounced: too muh rhon foo
Translated: You drive me crazy! This is for that special person that you can’t live with or without–again, it’s all in how you say it.

• Je vis d’amour et d’eau douce

Pronounced: zhuh vee dah moor ay doh doos
Translated: I live on love and fresh water. Although it doesn’t translate well in English, it’s a very common romantic French phrase.
